Old Swinford has a long tradition going back to 1670. It was given Grant Maintained Status in September 1989. There are 555 boys in total (mainly boarders), with an academic Sixth Form of 190. The school is situated on the edge of the town of Stourbridge and very close to open countryside, rail, airport and motorway network. Parents only pay for boarding, which costs รบ1600 a term for those without grants. Pupils experience a wide and balanced curriculum. There is a strong emphasis on science, technology and computing, in addition to the more traditional subjects such as Classics. Most boys go on to degree courses, including Oxbridge. The school has experienced a rapid expansion in recent years, including four purpose-built boarding houses, a new Creative Technology Centre which includes Electronics, and three new Science laboratories and a new classroom wing opened in February of this year. The Computer Network of over 5km. encompasses teaching and boarding areas with at least 150 'stations'. Boarding conditions are extremely comfortable. Sixth form boarders have their own individual study bedrooms. There is a carefully planned pastoral system, whereby each boy has his own tutor.
Whilst the major sports are rugby and cricket, many other sports are available including soccer, athletics, hockey, golf, swimming, sailing, fencing, squash and judo. There is a climbing wall. Music includes a brass band, orchestra, choir and various ensembles, with large numbers learning instruments. The school is run on traditional lines. There is a strong emphasis on the competitive spirit and self-discipline. Considerable importance is placed on inculcating qualities of leadership and responsibility.
A good pupil to teacher ratio ensures that each year Old Swinford has superb examination results both for GCSE and 'A' level. Average class size below the Sixth Form is 20 and in the Sixth Form 12.
Boys come from all over the country. Entry is mainly at 11 or 13, or 16 (for a Sixth Form place), by interview.
